About the data
Every listing starts from open or public sources and shows where each fact came from, when we retrieved it, under what license, and how confident we are. Descriptions are written by us from those facts; we don't copy anyone's prose. Photos come only from openly licensed sources and are credited. Logos are shown only to identify a business. Business photos from websites are never copied.

How we gather it
Businesses' own websites are read politely: we check each site's robots.txt, look only at the home, contact and about pages, and keep facts such as a public email, phone, social links, season, hours, published rates, a logo and awards. The Chamber of Commerce's public member pages are read only where its robots.txt allows, ten seconds apart, and those facts are marked as coming from the Chamber. Events come from public calendars, read only where robots.txt allows, with pauses of at least two seconds between requests (longer where a site asks): the towns of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, the Graves Memorial Library, the Kennebunk Free Library, the Brick Store Museum, the Seashore Trolley Museum, the Kennebunkport Historical Society, the Kennebunk Land Trust, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the Christmas Prelude schedule and the Chamber of Commerce calendar. We keep the facts (title, date, time, place) with a short summary in our own words, and every event links back to its source; the same event listed in two places shows once. See What's on. When two records turn out to be the same business, we merge them and keep the old address working.
Chamber member facts are shown like a phone book: names, contact details, hours and categories, each marked as coming from the Chamber.
What people say, and Local voices
Where real public coverage exists, a listing gets a short “What people say” summary written by us in our own words, covering criticism as well as praise. Each one links its sources (title, publisher, date), quotes at most one short line per source with attribution, and shows no ratings or scores. Sources are read only where robots.txt allows: the Portland Press Herald, Down East, Visit Maine, New England Today (Yankee) and Wikivoyage. Reddit, Facebook and Instagram don't permit automated access, so we don't read them; the New York Times and Seacoast Online forbid automated collection in their terms, and the Boston Globe is paywalled. Listings without real coverage get no summary. Owners can respond, and anyone can report a summary.
“Local voices” are first-hand posts from people who sign in with a verified email. Owners reply with a badge once they've claimed their listing. See the terms for posts.
What we don't collect
- No data from Google Maps, Airbnb, VRBO, TripAdvisor or Yelp, and no links to them.
- No star ratings or scores, ours or anyone else's.
- No home addresses of private individuals. Private vacation rentals show only the business contact they publish.
- Short-term-rental information appears only as town-wide counts, never as individual owners.
- No legal-entity names from license records, which can be personal names.
